Contacted by the press on the matter, Mega Image responded:

“Any opportunity in the supermarket segment is up for analysis in our company”, said Adrian Nicolescu, marketing director for Mega Image, without offering other details.

Billa denied the information, but confirmed that they are constantly analysing the state of the local market.

“There are no plans at the moment for selling Billa Romania. Still, market analysis are part of business routine without it meaning that we will make certain decision regarding operations”, says Theresa Teufel, communications manager for Billa Romania,

Billa is operated in Romania by Rewe, which also owns the Penny Market and XXL Discount chains.

Information about Rewe’s plans to sell local Billa supermarkets first leaked out this summer, following the announcement that the German group would be selling its Billa units in Italy. (source: business-review.eu)
