The store in Gherla will have an approx. area of 2,000 sqm, comparing to the standard 5,000 sqm of the regular unit. According to company’s officials, the retailer will extend with this new format to the cities with less than 30,000 inhabitants, if the Gherla pilot store will be a success. In case the new format will be extended in the country, the stores will be close, as surface, to the first Billa supermarkets opened by the German Rewe in Romania (approx. 2,500 sqm). Kaufland has a network of 85 stores in all Romania and had EUR 1.3 billion sales in 2011.
